There has been some ‘excitement’ about an early Beta being leaked and floating around Bnet. People expect me to get my panties in a bunch over this – well, I’m sorry but I don’t much care.
Oh, I mean I care to the degree that anyone joining/having/talking about this is going to be banned (cuz it’s the rule) but I don’t care to the degree that people think I care. (BTW, the rule is .rule1 - respecting the map and the people of the clan. Having this map violates both).
See you have to understand who we are and why we do what we do.
We’re just people who enjoy WC3 and who like RPG’s. I’m an old paper and pencil D&Der who always enjoyed making or partaking in whatever adventures someone could dream up. And I always dreamed about being able to ‘see’ what was going on in more than just my mind’s eye. Thanks to Blizzard and the World Editor that is possible.
I am first and foremost a player and a fan of RPGs. I’ve played them al - Defiance, LotR, TKoK, Dark Invasion – and enjoyed parts of them all. But with the opportunity we have with TBR my goal was to put out the best RPG I could; in other words the one I myself would want to play.
And that is where things get murky. TBR is a hobby, something that I (and others) work on in our spare time. It’s time that we could spend collecting stamps, or riding a bike or drinking ourselves into oblivion but we spend it here instead. And that creates its own set of problems. It’s not that I don’t love the TBR community it’s just that it adds another thing between me and playing. Gotta answer PM’s, regulate channels, find people you can trust to help you out with certain things (thanks again to the clan chiefs and shaman)… it all takes away from working on the map and ultimately playing the map. But we’re big, we’re huge, and there is something to be said for that.
It means we have our share of problems. It means we have our share of assclowns among us. It means we have a big ole target on our backs. It means people look at us and judge us without knowing their ass from a hole in the ground. And you know what? I don’t really care.
People are complaining that we’ve been in Beta too long, I don’t really care. The map is going to get done when it’s done and it’s going to be as close to perfect as it can be. When it’s done I’ll be as proud as I can be of the people who helped us get it done.
People say we should have an open Beta, well I don’t want an open Beta. I want people first impression of the map to be the finished thing. Not some buggy piece of crap that makes you wonder if we know what the hell we are doing. Beta’s started at version .01 (the map that actually got leaked) and are now over .40. And these aren’t small changes, every version represents a significant piece of the map that needed done.
People say that banning people for ‘being curious’ about the map will hurt the community. Not only do I disagree, I don’t much care. I’m not making the map for a ‘community’; I’m making it for true TBRers. If that ends up being 6 of us, then the 6 of us will charge into hell together. We don’t ban people because we are on some sort of ‘power trip’ we ban them because they aren’t the type of people we don’t want around us. It’s our community and we have say over who we want to associate with.
So what about the people who are spreading it around? Again, I don’t much care. In a few days people will stop being ‘curious’ or they’ll figure out I just don’t care that much and realize they are simply wasting their time and give up. If it’s some ‘ploy’ to get me fired up they are going to find out they are insignificant to me. Either way it’s not going to affect the timetable for 2.0 and it certainly isn’t going to affect how we do things around here.
But keep those reports coming cuz it’s helping us to weed out the dipshits. And when 2.0 is finally released the community will be scrubbed clean (or mostly clean) and your games will be filled with people who don’t need help wiping after taking a poop. And I applaud those of you who feel the way we do about TBR – about putting together a community of true players and protecting it from people who just don’t get it.
