As per the other thread discussing it's slowness the server on which our forum happens to be housed is currently receiving a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack and it thus inaccessible.
For those who are unaware of what this entails a large number of computers (a few dozen to several thousand depending on the capabilities of the botter) request excessive amounts of data from the server which it is unable to fulfill due to bandwidth limitations and hence "crashes." I put crashes in quotes because in many cases the server is still up just unreachable due to the wall of other connections in front of you.
TL;DR THE TUBES ARE FILLED DUE TO ASSCLOWNS. TRY AGAIN LATER.
Edit: And sometimes the server dies and you get mySQL errors right and left .
General Error SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ]
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2) [2002]
An sql error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact an administrator if this problem persists.
I'm thinking that's gonna need a server restart :S

What worries me is that the fact that the forums arent even active, theyre already being shut down by simple DDoss attacks? What then can be expected once actual traffic flows onto the site?

Ehhhh for the mySQL database to crash I'm starting to think we're dealing with a massive network of slaves. It takes more than a couple hundred simultaneous queries to crash one. For the hosting company to actively combat this in an effective manner would require them to essentially deny their customer use of the server for a few hours a very poor marketing strategy that would lose them a crap ton of customers. If your not willing to inconvenience your user base to provide a permanent solution a good botter is going to be a massive pain in your behind. We took our game down for the better part of a week and had round the clock people watching our connection count. 2 people on east coast usa time 2 people on GMT and 1 person in Australia with alarms to alert us to abnormally high connections while we slept. I slept with my laptop next to me those few days It was always a race to see if you could drop all incoming connection before the server went down. Even the most prepared of servers will fall to a large enough botnet. Not much you can do if the bots are killing your server before it can react. Edit: This is why large companies have redundant servers
